Notes from Rev. Bocher’s sermon…

This July…  250 yrs… Freedom fm. Eng…  King Geo!  We don’t want…

Very imp messages P: Gentiles. Free in X

Imp to us: Young: “I can’t wait…”  Schools out!… 16… Turning 18!

Worried: For many adults:  Fr. = Doing what I want to do. Not having someone tell me…

Don’t tread…

Not against freedom.  Grateful that we’ve dev system: balance of powers… Free to express my… religion… Grateful for… Blessed!

My problem is that many people value freedom but not the part that comes w/ it: // responsibility.  2x

Turn to scriptures: Qs. Cain… – 1st qs. of human beings in B: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Hebrew people: Who am I responsible for?  Do I have to care for the foreigners who live in Israel?  Widows who… Orphans who…

Indirectly, J answers that question in a story he tells: Good Samaritan.

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  J: How do you read it?

J: “Love G… neighbor”.  Yes!  Do this and you shall live.  “But he wanted to justify himself and so he asked…”

// Who, exactly is my neighbor?  Who am I responsible to love & care for?  /

Implied in the expert’s qs: “Who am I free NOT to love & care for?” //. So J tells him the story of the good Sam.  RECAP

P wrote his letters to… Some in Corinthian ch also thought they were free to… not responsible to others:  “12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.”

P: We are not our own. We belong to X.  J =our role model.  Came to: a) Claim his rights (“worship me”).  No, X came as a servant.  READ Luke 22:24-27

Yes, I am free. / You are free.  Free to serve others; free to love others; free to care for others but never/ NEVER free to do what I want at the expense of others./

Let us seek to be people who use our freedom; our resources to care for others.

On this 250th anniversary, we celebrate our nation’s freedom, let us as a nation be free not to do things only to our OWN advantage but may we use our resources and our freedom as a nation to reach out and care for the people who are hurting and get left on the side of the road.  Amen.
